“Travessia” is a project by Clara Leitao, inspired by the journeys, the magic, and the hardships of the characters from "The Beauty and the Beast" and created during her artist residency at NoPoint Atelier in October 2020.
For the last couple of months, Clara has been working on adaptations of the tale, making freehand drawings, in which she captured passages from the many different versions of the story.
"In many of the versions, a girl sleeps with a monster against her will. She eventually finds out he is actually a beautiful prince who’s under a spell. However, she discovers this right before his spell is about to end, and so she must suffer the consequences. The prince leaves her, and she must go through extreme hardship to find him again."
During her residency, Clara put together all of the pieces of her own adaptation in the form of a print. Her print “Travessia” tells the story of a girl who goes on a long journey. While illustrating “The Beauty and the Beast”, it also reflects on the difficult paths we must cross in life, both in the physical world and within ourselves.
